This charming coastal town isn’t just a great place to vacation. It’s also full of history.  From gorgeous beaches and scenic lighthouses to boat tours and unique shopping boutiques and restaurants\, there’s plenty to do. \nThe Kennebunk River runs through Dock Square\, separating the towns of Kennebunkport and Kennebunk. It’s just one mile from Dock Square to the breakwater where the Kennebunk River meets the ocean.  Both the river and the ocean have played an important role in the development of the region as a shipping and fishing area. The river is still a main feature in downtown Kennebunkport\, with some buildings built right on the water. \nKennebunkport has also become well known as a hub for arts and culture. With inspirational scenery everywhere\, it’s no surprise that it has an artist community. \nIn fact\, artists have flocked to the town for years for its scenic beauty\, and now Kennebunkport is home to many art galleries and museums. Some of these are dedicated to the works of local artists\, while others showcase the history of the region. \nThe town is loaded with shops\, galleries\, and studios featuring paintings\, photography\, wind sculptures\, and more. You can even find jewelry and kaleidoscopes created right here. All of these are great ways to take a Maine memory home with you. If you are joining us there\, let me know.\nAugust 13 – Fly to St. Pierre.  Stay in the Terrasses du Port.  mike Madigan booked some rooms for the people signed up already.  Contact him to transfer the reservation over to you.  There may be other accommodations but  logistics is difficult to arrange.  it is France\, not Canada.\nAugust 15 – Fly to St. John’s\, Newfoundland. PAL Aviation seems to be the place for the piston crowd.  Comments talk about $125 (C) Handling charge but that includes 3 nights parking\, so I guess OK (I think that is $90 US).  Fuel is very expensive so if you have tip tanks you will tanker fuel in.\n\nLast time we stayed at the Sheraton hotel downtown\, which is a 4 star hotel\, in a great location\, and cheap. 4 nights.\nEnterprise will deliver cars to the FBO. I recommend a bigger car (SUV) for 2 couples to share.\n\n\nAugust 16 – day trip to Terra Nova National Park.\nAugust 17 – day trip down the west side of Avalon peninsula.  Also\, the Conception Bay museum in Harbour Grace has a new aviation museum about Amelia Earhardt who flew from Harbour Grace to Ireland in a Lockheed Vega 5 years after the Lindbergh flight.\nAugust 18 – historic walking tour of St. John’s\nAugust 19 – Fly to Bangor\, ME to clear customs. We always stayed at the Old Town Inn next to the airport and enjoyed David’s and Lucinda’s hospitality. They have sold the Inn and we will try visiting Newport\, RI\, instead this year. \nYou can fly into Newport State Airport (KUUU). There are three instrument approaches\, two to the shorter runway 16 (2\,623ft); RNAV with MDA at 600ft and VOR/DME at 680ft and a LOC to runway 22 (720ft). Fog is always a concern this early in the season and the other choice is to fly into Quonset Airport (KOQU) which has a 7\,500ft runway with ILS and RNAV to runway 16 (DA 218ft) and RNAV to 34 (MDA 460ft). Quonset airport is only a 20 min drive to Newport\, and it is easy to get rental cars delivered to the airport. \nNewport is a city founded 1639 set on Aquidneck Island in the New England state of Rhode Island. It is in Narragansett Bay\, approximately 33 miles southeast of Providence. It is known as a New England summer resort and is also known for the Gilded Age mansions lining Bellevue Avenue\, some of which are now museums. The most famous is The Breakers\, an 1895 mansion patterned after a Renaissance palace. It is also famous for its rich sailing history. It was the location of the first U.S. Open tournaments in both tennis and golf\, as well as every challenge to the America’s Cup between 1930 and 1983. It is also the home of Salve Regina University and Naval Station Newport\, which houses the United States Naval War College\, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center\, and an important Navy training center. It was a major 18th-century port city and boasts many buildings from the colonial era. \nThere are many hotels in Newport. We suggest that you look into a hotel that suits you. This weekend is preseason\, but it is still a good idea to book early. TripAdvisor has a good list with 25 suggestions of what to see and do in Newport. Everyone is responsible for their own ground transportation. \nWe will plan on meeting at 6pm Friday evening for drinks and dinner. We will make dinner reservations when we know how many will be arriving Friday. Saturday\, weather allowing\, I will host a barbecue at 5pm at my waterfront home which is three miles south of Quonset Airport (25-minute drive from Newport). \nFBO: MRB Aviation\, 304-262-2507 (flymrb.com)\, is a full-service FBO and will provide full-service refueling at discounted prices.   \nFacilities:  Runway 08/26 is 8815 x 150.  The tower has handled formation clinic traffic before.  On the southeast side of the runway is a newly renovated terminal building with parking space\, conference room and the Katara’s Crosswinds Café restaurant\, open 6 am – 6 pm on Thursday for breakfast and lunch and 6am-8pm on Friday and Saturday for breakfast\, lunch and dinner. \nAccommodations:  Block room rates are arranged at Home2 Suites by Hilton (Martinsburg)\, which offers an FBO rate of $96.   The room block is reserved under “Martinsburg Formation”.   Book rooms using the on-line booking link:  https://bit.ly/35XE308 .  Alternately\, you can call the hotel directly at 304-579-8888 and select “0” to speak directly with the front desk (vs. pressing “1” which goes to central reservations). \nTransportation:   We will arrange one or more minivans according to the number of attendees; the cost will be shared by whoever uses the minivans.  Please sign up as early as possible so we can get an accurate count.  For those wishing to rent their own car\, there are two options.  Enterprise will drop off/pick up rental cars at the FBO.  Make reservations through the local Enterprise office (304-264-2400).  Hertz will drop off/pick up rental cars at the FBO\, but only for Hertz Gold members.  Make reservations through the local Hertz office (304-262-3600).  When setting up car rentals\, make sure Enterprise/Hertz knows you are picking the vehicle up at the Martinsburg terminal building at 170 Aviation Way.  The clinic host and/or the FBO will provide transportation from the parking ramp to the FBO for rental car pick-up. \nRegistration:  Register on-line\, review formation flying procedures\, and be prepared to sign the B2OSH Practice Waiver after arrival. \nCost:  Individuals will pay for transportation\, lodging\, dinners (in town)\, and Friday and Saturday lunches (at the airport café).  Host will collect a $(TBD) fee to cover drinks and snacks\, plus a collective tip for line service personnel.  Fuel costs will be one invoice per aircraft fueling and will need to be paid to the FBO on a daily basis by close of business at 7pm.  \nProgram & Event Details:  Those with no formation experience MUST review the “Intro to Formation” slideshow and the Bonanza addendum on the B2OSH website.  Ground School begins Thursday afternoon at 4:00 pm in the terminal briefing room.  We will have “ride-along” introduction flights first thing Friday for those with no formation experience.  Practice sessions will begin with basic 2-ship formation flights\, flown with a safety pilot in the right seat.  The training includes element takeoffs\, wingman station keeping\, route position\, cross-unders\, and element landings.  As proficiency is attained\, pilots will be cleared to fly solo formation\, and possibly progress to intermediate maneuvers such as close trail\, echelon turns\, and rejoins.  By the end of the clinic\, pilots should be proficient in all 2-ship B2OSH flight maneuvers.  The clinic will conclude with a simulated B2OSH mass formation flight. \nAircraft & Preparation Requirements: \nPilot:  Private Pilot License\, Current Medical\, Confidence + Humility\, Positive Attitude!\nPlane:  Dual rudder pedals\, intercom\, copilot PTT switch\, current annual and insurance.\nSelf-Study:  Review FFI Formation Guide\, FFI Bonanza Supplement\, and Intro to Formation at https://www.b2osh.org/web/B2OSH/Pages/Training/TrainingGeneral.asp and https://www.ffi.aero.  The Formation Pilot’s Knowledge Guide\, available at www.FlyFAST.org\, is also an excellent comprehensive formation reference.  \nWashington DC SFRA training:  https://faasafety.gov/gslac/ALC/CourseLanding.aspx?cID=405 \nSchedule (briefings are mandatory for all participants): \nThursday:  Early afternoon:  Arrival & check-in at terminal.  Pick up rental cars from FBO lot.\n1600:  Welcome/orientation briefing at terminal\, followed by ground school (mandatory for those with no previous formation experience\, great refresher for anyone rusty on formation procedures).\n1900:  Dinner in town.   \nFriday:\n0800:  Update & flying schedule briefing.  Morning introduction flights for first time formation pilots will be “ride-along” flights with an experienced formation pilot.  Proficiency flights for experienced formation pilots.  Lunch at airport café.  Afternoon proficiency flights for all pilots.\n1900:  Dinner in town. \nSaturday:\n0800:  Update & flying schedule briefing.  Morning proficiency flights for all pilots.  Lunch at airport café.  Afternoon proficiency flights for all pilots.\n1900:  Dinner in town. \nSunday:\n0800:  Clinic wrap-up.\n0830:  B2OSH Mass Formation briefing\, flight and debriefing.\n1200:  Departures.
